Research Summary

My research focuses on accounting for the source and sink fluxes of CH4, N2O and CO2 across all sectors. In particular, I have developed a process-based terrestrial ecosystem model that is one of the few models worldwide able to simulate the source and sink fluxes of all three greenhouse gases simultaneously. In developing this model, I have emphasized deriving mechanistic understanding from experiments and process studies. As a result, the model represents greenhouse gas production processes comprehensively and systematically, which substantially improves both its process representation and its accuracy. The model has been included in the Global Carbon Project since 2020, and in the most recent multi-model intercomparison it ranked fourth in overall performance among the 18 participating global models. It has also been invited to join the latest Global Methane Budget assessment.

I developed a process-based soil CH4 emission module (IBIS-CH4) to evaluate the accuracy of simulated CH4 emissions from wetlands and rice paddies and to quantify regional and global emission magnitudes and their spatial and temporal variation. The module dynamically simulates the production of H2 and acetate from soil organic carbon, the production and oxidation of CH4, and the transport of CH4 by ebullition, diffusion and plant stems. In parallel, I developed a process-based soil N2O emission module for terrestrial ecosystems (IBIS-MicN). It simulates autotrophic nitrification, nitrifier denitrification, heterotrophic nitrification and denitrifier denitrification, and it explicitly represents microbial dynamics. It is the only model internationally that includes both nitrifier denitrification and heterotrophic nitrification.

Together with several research institutions in China, I initiated and lead the “China Greenhouse Gas Source and Sink Accounting” research program. It quantifies the source and sink fluxes of three greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4 and N2O) from four anthropogenic emission sectors (energy; industrial processes and product use; agriculture, forestry and other land use; and waste) and from natural ecosystems. The aim is to build a complete scientific accounting framework covering all sectors and all three gases, and to provide a useful complement to the national greenhouse gas inventory.
